SMALL GOBI Strictly Protected Area (SGSPA) establishment story

Mongolia has set aside 17.4 percent of its land, covering a vast area of 27.2 million hectares, to create a network of 90 state-protected regions. Within this allocation, 16 areas, accounting for 45.6%, are designated as strictly protected zones, 29 areas (43.7%) as national conservation parks, 30 areas (10.2%) as nature reserves, and 14 regions (0.48%) for national monuments.

This protected land, divided into two parts "A" and "B," is situated within the territories of 4 sums in two provinces covers a total area of 1.8 million hectares. It represents 2 distinct ecological zones, Galby and Borzong Gobi along with their extensive surrounding satellite areas.
